Setting up a boundary for your VR space

Create a safe Roomscale or Stationary boundary on your Meta Quest headset.

Use this guide to understand what a boundary is, when to choose Roomscale vs Stationary, and how to set up a Roomscale boundary on a Meta Quest headset.

The boundary (sometimes called “Guardian”) is a built-in safety feature that defines the safe play area around you. When you get close to the edge, a virtual wall appears so you don’t bump into real-world objects. Setting it up correctly helps prevent trips or collisions while you’re learning in SIMVANA.

Roomscale vs Stationary boundaries

  • Roomscale (best for SIMVANA applications): Designed for moving around inside a defined area. Meta recommends an unobstructed space of at least 6.5 ft × 6.5 ft (2 m × 2 m). SIMVANA scenarios that involve exploration, equipment interaction, or procedure practice generally benefit from Roomscale.
  • Stationary: Best for experiences where you’re seated or standing in place with minimal movement. The headset won’t expect you to walk around the room.

How to set up a Roomscale boundary

Follow these steps any time you’re in a new room or you’ve moved furniture:

  1. Open Quick settings Press the Meta button on your right controller to open the universal menu, then select the clock on the left to open Quick settings.
  2. Go to Boundary settings In Quick settings, select Settings (top right) → Environment setupBoundary.
  3. Choose Adjust boundary Select Adjust boundary, then choose Roomscale. The headset will guide you to trace your safe area on the floor. Use your controller to draw the outline of the space you’ll use.
  4. Confirm and save When you’re happy with the outline, confirm to save the boundary. If a previously saved boundary doesn’t fit this room, you can clear it and create a new one from the same Boundary menu.
  5. (Optional) Use suggested boundaries On supported headsets/versions, Quest can suggest a boundary based on scanned free space. You can accept, adjust, or redraw as needed.

Setup checklist and safety tips

  • Space: Aim for ≥ 6.5 ft × 6.5 ft of clear, well-lit floor space for Roomscale. Remove trip hazards (stools, cables, bags).
  • Stand near the center of your play area when drawing and look around while tracing so the outline matches the real room.
  • Re-draw when things change: If you move to a new room or rearrange furniture, revisit Settings → Environment setup → Boundary to adjust or clear and redraw.
